Animals and Pets

Animals are multi-cellular organisms with very complex form of existence and they belong to the animalia kingdom. These multi-cellular organisms have the capability of hunting or searching for food that it needs and is capable of internal digestion. Animals possess complex body structure with effective sense organs.

Animals reproduce by sexual copulation as opposed to the asexual reproduction of the plant kingdom. The reproduction cycle of animals vary from species to species and it is normally a long process leading to the birth of the young one.

One way of classifying animals is to classify them as wild animals and domestic animals. Domestic animals are those tamed by human beings and used in a variety of ways for the benefit of human beings.

Human beings have always sought the company of animals from time immemorial. We use animals in a number of ways. For some, animals are companions and members of their family. Most of us enjoy the companionship of an animal because we enjoy the playfulness of the animals and they help us relax.

For some, animals provide livelihood. They rear livestock to earn their living. Milk, meat and hide from the livestock have highly profitable market. There are others who rear animals as sports animals such as for horse racing. They too rear these animals for economic reasons.

In certain parts of the world animals are used as working partners. Bulls are used for plowing the land; tamed elephants are used to transport locally, heavy loads and tree trunks. Horses are used as a mode of transport. Donkeys too are used to carry heavy loads. Dogs have always been our closest companion and are used to guard our house.

Animals are used widely in the medicinal and cosmetic field. These are called laboratory animals. These animals are used to test the side effects of new medicines and cosmetics developed before using them on human beings.

Animals have become an integral part of human being’s life and it is because we have learnt to tame them. Domesticated animals therefore serve as a great support to human race. Even while we were hunter-gatherers, we depended heavily on animals for food and clothing. Animals also have religious values in certain Asian countries and in North America.

Some of the animals have faced extinction for various reasons including human irresponsibility and greed. Animals play an important role in the ecological system and extinction of certain group of animals can cause imbalance in the eco system.
