Automotive

The automotive industry is as old as the human race. The origin of this industry can be traced back to the invention of the wheel, though in its own primitive form. If wheels were not to be invented, today’s most sophisticated automotive industry would not have been there. Automotive industry consists of all aspects of the life of an automobile from the design stage to the maintenance after sale. It involves designing of the engine, shape of the body and the manufacturing of the designed product followed by promotional activities of marketing and the sale of the automobile.
The primitive forms of automobile started taking a new shape only in 19th century. Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built the first steam propelled vehicle in 1869. In the 19th centuries there was a great development in terms of technological inventions and discoveries and this paved way to new forms of transport. The isolated and unconnected efforts in the automobile industry in the various parts of the world started taking shape after the Second World War.

The word automobile and automotive are of Greek and Latin origin. The term ‘auto’ means ‘self’ in Greek and the term ‘mobile’ is from the Latin word, ‘mobilis’. So automobile means an object that which moves by itself rather than being pulled or pushed by a human being or animal. The term ‘automotive’ is an adjective referring to the automobiles.

There are different types of automobiles in the automotive industry. It includes Cars, scooters, motorcycles, bus, mini bus, truck, mini truck, recreational vehicles, lorries/trucks etc. Each type of vehicle is designed to serve a very specific purpose it can as passenger carriers or as goods carriers. The shape of the vehicle, engine capacity and the other aspects of the vehicle is decided based on how it is going to be put into use.

The automotive industry has seen a great growth and development in the past decades and it is one of the most money making industries. This has been an industry which did not see a slouch all through its history. It has been calculated that around sixty nine million vehicles were manufactured in 2006 world wide and this number should have been almost doubled in 2008.

Automobiles have become part and parcel of our lives and it would be hard to imagine a life without human beings. They have paved way for growth in many other industries as movement of people become rather easier and transportation of goods and raw materials much faster.
