Webmasters are on a constant search for new and better ways to advertise. An emerging trend is the use of link bidding. For anyone new to this concept, link bidding is done on sites that offer a link directory in which a webmaster can pay for a sponsored spot.

Essentially the webmaster will submit details related to his/her site and then choose how much he/she wishes to pay for a particular spot on the directory. Of course, the more one is willing to pay, the more exposure his/her site will receive. On some link bidding sites the highest bidder will not only be entitled to the number one position but will also receive special advertising privileges for his/her site.

This type of advertising affords an individual the opportunity to have control over his/her site’s listing and hence its exposure. The listing is not based on when a site is listed but rather on the bid itself. Most link bidding sites are automatically reviewed so a site submission can be listed immediately.

The highest bid will attain the number one spot and the top 10 – 20 bidding links (exact number depends on the specific site) will be displayed prominently on the homepage. In many cases, the highest bidding link is displayed in a prominent position on every page. Some directories provide additional incentives as well.

The good news is that bidding starts very low – for as little as one dollar on most link directories. The process for getting started is actually very simple. Usually the webmaster is required to submit his/her link and is then redirected to a page that allows one to place bids.

Some of the link directories will keep the links displayed permanently and the webmaster has the option of increasing the bid over time. This provides the webmaster with a means of keeping a prominent listing position for his/her site.

Most site owners will agree that gaining exposure is not only a good thing – it is absolutely necessary if one is to compete online. The problem most webmasters are faced with is the skyrocketing costs of advertisements and PPC campaigns. Traditional methods of advertising do not offer one real control over potential listing spots.

It is no wonder that site owners are willing to explore alternative methods of exposure. It seems that the future outlook for link bidding is bright and promising. Link bidding not only provides a way to actually choose a spot for one’s site, but it is very affordable which makes it a very appealing option.
