Transportation

Transportation is a word derived from the Latin words ‘trans’ and ‘portare’ which mean ‘across’ and ‘to carry’ respectively. Transportation is the process of people and goods moving from one place to another. Transportation also has an industry of itself which deals with various transport services and transport equipments.

Transportation is mainly categorized into three main categories - vehicles, operation and infrastructure. Vehicles include the network of actual vehicles which are used for transportation. They are also called as modes of transportation and include buses, trains, air crafts, automobiles and so on. Infrastructure refers to the transportation network which would include the roads, bridges, railways, airways, waterways, etc. Operation involves the process based on which the vehicles are operated on the network. This deals with the legal documentations and processes as well.

Though there are a number of modes of transportation, the main modes which we are going to discuss here are about airways, roadways, railways and water ways. Airways are considered to be a sophisticated mode of transportation as it is more comfortable and costly too. There are various types of aircrafts. Some are used purely for passengers and some others are used by the air force department. There are also small crafts available which are personally owned by multi-millionaires.

Railways is another mode of transportation which supports the economy of the country by transporting passengers and goods for a comparatively lesser price. Trains are the vehicles which are used here and they run on two parallel steel lines. There are different types of trains which operate differently. Each have their own set of engineering and run using different types of energies like coal, diesel and electricity. The difference could be realized in the speed and smoothness of the vehicle.

Road transport is one of the oldest means of transport. Various types of vehicles use the roadways which can be broadly classified into cars, buses, automobiles, bicycles, trucks, and so on. Water transportation is considered to be one of the cheapest means in term of shipping goods. Though it takes lot more time to deliver the goods then when compared to other means of transport, it is highly preferred by traders because of its low cost. Ships and boats are also used by passengers to move from one place to another. This has lately been converted into an entertainment and vocational zone as well. Though there are hundreds of modes of transportation available, each one has its own specialty and preference. In simple words, nothing would be possible without the transportation industry.
