A computer or a PC is a microprocessor based electronic device that is designed to be used by a single user at a time. Computers are basically cluster of electronic components those are controlled by software. Computers are also called as microcomputers. Computers come in different forms such as desktop computers, laptops, notebooks, tablet PCs and pocket PCs.

The history of PCs dates back to early 80s. Though Apple Computers introduced the first personal computer in 1977, it was IBM PC that was introduced in 1981 swept the market. The term PC became synonymous to IBM because of its popularity. As you would presume the early versions of PCs were not as powerful as they are today.

PCs became more and more popular as the price decreased gradually and its capabilities increased dramatically. Today you can get a PC with reasonable capabilities for few hundred dollars.

There are different types of PCs. They are classified based on their size and usage.

Desktops are the earliest form of personal computers. As you would have presumed correctly the name desktop is from the fact that they are for use on a desk. This was the most popular form of personal computer that was found to be the best fit for offices. The main unit called the CPU or the Central Processing Unit or the Console is a flat tablet like bed that can be placed on the desk. This type of PC has still not lost its place in the PC world.

Laptops and notebooks are known for their portability. This type of personal computers is replacing the desktop models fast. This is the most popular type of personal computer amongst traveling businessmen. Laptops are little more expensive than desktops. However, laptops are also becoming more and more affordable. One of the greatest advantages of laptops is that they can operate on batteries for as long as four to six hours making it an ideal travel partner.

Initially laptops were limited in the functionalities and capabilities. However, today laptops have all the functionalities of desktop models. They weigh anywhere between 1 kg to 3 kg. Notebooks are of the size of an A4 size paper and normally weigh around I kg.

Tablet PCs are slate shaped mobile PCs. They have touch sensitive screens and handwriting recognition capabilities. Text input is done normally done through this handwriting recognition. They also have virtual on display digital keyboard. They are also portable like laptops and notebooks and operate on both batteries and adapters.
