News is one of the wings of the mass media. Media or mass media refers to the communication channels used to reach out to people at a mass scale to provide information, entertainment etc. Media includes Radio, Television, News Paper, Magazine and the latest additions to this list include websites, blogs, forums and podcasts.
News pays attention to the current happenings of the world. It aggregates the information and presents it to the public through various channels of mass media including newspapers, radio, television and online news forums. News in its original form presented only verified pure hard facts and it did not try to interpret the facts or analyze the facts. The analysis and the interpretation of these facts were left to the audience. They presented unbiased report of the happenings as they were. Later the news items were presented with a certain amount of interpretation. Today where there are hundreds of channels, each channel presented the same news in a variety of ways depending on whom or what they support.
News can be classified into political news, sports news, weather report, world news, local news, news regarding the stock market and financial industry etc. Generally, a news cast included all the categories listed above. However, there are news casts those concentrate only on a specific area of interest depending on the audience they target.
Media in general on the other hand does not limit itself to one area such as news. Media takes anything that comes its way to make money. Today media and forms of media exist primarily for commercial reasons. They provide entertainment, to its audience through music channels, sports channels etc. There are television channels those are totally dedicated for telecasting movies. There are also educative channels those telecast informational documentary films, history etc. Most often to cover a greater volume of audience radio and television channels provide a variety of programs.
Today online media is growing very fast. Lots of people are attracted to online media. Even those who label Television an ‘idiot box’ remain glued to their internet enabled computers browsing through various websites and surfing the net. One of the online medium, blogs allows its users to publish their comments and views online; so it attracts lot of people who like to express their opinion to the world. This is not possible in the case of television or radio. One can easily see the growing interest of the public in the online media as opposed to the offline media.
